I’ve seen what depression can do, up close. Family members, friends, comrades. Some of the strongest people I’ve ever known, brought to their knees by something you can’t see, can’t touch, and often can’t explain. One close friend tragically took his own life last year after a relationship breakdown. It was a painful reminder that depression doesn’t discriminate. It can strike anyone, at any time.
The good news is that society has come a long way in recognising mental health as just as important as physical health. But awareness alone isn’t enough, people need support, and they need to know where to find it.
Here in Leicestershire, there is help available. The County Council provides a range of mental health services, advice, and support for people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you're struggling yourself or supporting someone else, there are practical options available, from crisis intervention and talking therapies to wellbeing courses and peer support.
You don’t need a diagnosis to seek help. Sometimes just having someone to talk to, or knowing where to turn next, makes all the difference.
Key services include:
- Access to mental health professionals through your GP
- Support with housing, employment, or day-to-day challenges through social care
- Free online resources, guides and signposting to charities and community groups
