As a local councillor and passionate advocate for our environment, I was recently contacted by a concerned resident about the ongoing situation at Blackbrook Reservoir, and I wholeheartedly share their concerns.
Since late spring, at the instruction of Natural England, the reservoir has been deliberately drained down. I’m told this is part of an annual runoff procedure, but the consequences this year have been devastating. Millions of litres of perfectly good water have been discarded at a time when we are approaching drought conditions. Frankly, that’s hard to justify.
The impact on local wildlife and biodiversity has been profound. Marginal plant life has been destroyed. Young Brown Trout, once abundant in the reservoir, have almost completely disappeared. And tragically, Great Crested Grebes have failed to raise any chicks this season, as their nests have been left exposed and vulnerable to predators due to the falling water levels.
This isn’t just about water management. It’s about common sense, sustainability, and protecting the natural balance of our local ecosystems. The actions taken, though perhaps well-intentioned, seem out of step with the realities on the ground.
I have written an open letter to our Member of Parliament, Mrs Amanda Hack, asking her to intervene and seek an urgent review of Natural England’s policy at Blackbrook. I’ve also requested that the rationale behind these decisions be made clear to residents and that we explore more environmentally responsible alternatives going forward.
Our natural spaces matter, and we must do everything we can to preserve them.
As always, I’ll keep you informed of any updates. If this issue concerns you too, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
