An application has been submitted to build 54 new affordable homes on the farmer’s field next to Hugglescote Recreation Ground, and I want to be clear about why I’m firmly opposed to it.
As the County Councillor for the area, I see first-hand the pressures that ongoing development is placing on Hugglescote. This isn’t about saying “no” to affordable homes, it’s about saying “no” to inappropriate development in the wrong place.
This site sits immediately next to one of the most unique and historically important buildings in the country, a timber-framed house dating back to the 13th Century (it was heavily modified in the 17th century hence 1620s house). Its survival is incredibly rare, and it deserves to be preserved and respected. Building a modern housing estate next to it would be a tragic mistake and a permanent scar on Hugglescote’s heritage.
The village has already absorbed huge volumes of housing in recent years, and it’s at breaking point. Local infrastructure hasn’t kept up, schools are full and the GP surgeries are stretched.
Ashburton Road is already notorious for congestion, and the damage caused by HGVs from nearby developments has left the roads in a shocking state, a state that despite my best efforts wont be repaired until the current developments are completed. Another round of heavy construction traffic will just prolong the misery for the people living here. Residents deserve relief, not another burden.
The developers claim the ‘Reccy’ will be protected, but this is about much more than just open space. It’s about protecting the character, identity, and liveability of Hugglescote as a whole. Placing a large balancing pond at the bottom of a children’s play area is just madness.
I urge all residents to make their voices heard and submit their objections to North West Leicestershire District Council. This is your community, and your views matter. Enough is enough. Let’s stand together and protect what makes Hugglescote special before it’s lost for good.
